3 Major Signs you Need Engine Repair
The engine is the heart of your vehicle. Through a series of events it is able to generate power that is eventually transferred by the transmission and driveline to the tires to make them spin. The power that is created by the engine is an amazing feat of engineering, but the engineering is not perfect. If it were, you'd never have to worry about maintenance or repairs. Unfortunately that just isn't the case. If a motor were to go unmaintained, meaning it is deprived of oil changes and other routine maintenance, it would quickly fail.
High mileage is another risk factor for engines. After years on the road it may come time for engine repair due to general wear and tear, even if routine maintenance was conducted. So how can you tell if your vehicle is due for some sort of engine repair or may even need an engine rebuild? There are few important signs to look out for. If you experience any of these symptoms of engine failure be sure to contact your mechanic right away.
Increased Exhaust Smoke
An increased amount of exhaust smoke coming out of the tailpipe generally means that there is some sort of issue with the engine. You can often tell what the trouble is based on the color of the smoke.
- Blue exhaust - A vehicle that is emitting blue exhaust is more than likely suffering from an oil leak inside the engine. If oil is being burnt up it means the motor is at risk of improper lubrication, which can cause major damage.
- White exhaust - A coolant leak that is allowing the cooling system fluid to be burnt up in the combustion chamber will result in puffy white smoke. Be sure to get to a shop right away to avoid overheating issues.
- Black exhaust - If your vehicle is producing large quantities of black smoke it is burning too much gasoline. This can increase engine temperature and lead to many other problems.
Loud Engine Noises
A knocking noise that speeds up and down with the RPMs of the engine is a sign that the engine bearings are worn out. These bearings are what the moving parts of the motor rest on and should they become worn due to insufficient lubrication or high mileage it can result in catastrophic damage to the interior of the motor.
Reduction in Engine Power
Another sign that something is amiss is a lack of power. You will most likely notice this during acceleration, as you struggle to get up to highway speeds. There are several issues that can cause this so be sure to get to the mechanic for proper engine diagnostics.
