5 Major Signs of Brake Trouble
There are many different issues that can occur in vehicles, many of which don't necessarily need immediate attention, although they should be dealt with as soon as possible in order to prevent further damage. However, there is one kind of problem that should be addressed as soon as it becomes apparent. Brake trouble could spell disaster if not corrected in a timely manner, which is why if you experience any of these common signs of brake failure then you need to have them fixed right away.
Perhaps one of the first symptoms of brake trouble that you will experience is a grinding, screeching, or howling noise that occurs as you try to slow your vehicle. This usually happens for one of two reasons, the first being your vehicle has brake pads with a built in warning mechanism that tells you if pads are getting low. The second reason would be because there are no brake pads left and metal is grinding on metal.
Soft Brake Pedal
If you find yourself having to press harder, and harder on the brake pedal to get a response from the brake system there's a good chance that the brake pads are heavily worn. However, this can also be caused by air in the brake lines or even a dangerous brake fluid leak.
A vibrating brake pedal or steering wheel, or even vibrations throughout the vehicle that occur as you slow it down usually mean that you have warped brake rotors. The rotors are what brake pads grab in order to create the friction to slow the vehicle and if the surface area is reduced because of warping, often caused by excessive heat due to elongated braking, your ability to slow down will be greatly reduced.
Vehicle should not try to swerve one way or the other when the brakes are applied. If this happens it likely means there is uneven brake pad wear occurring. Other issues that could cause this include dirty brake fluid or a stuck wheel cylinder.
All vehicles are equipped with a number of dashboard indicator lights to inform the driver of different problems. One of these lights will represent the brake system, and it often reads ABS, which stands for anti-lock braking system. If this light comes on you will want to visit the auto repair shop right away to find out exactly what trouble the system is having.
