5 Signs of Ignition Switch Problems

5 Signs of Ignition Switch ProblemsWhen you turn the key in the ignition of your vehicle a small series of instantaneous events occur that should allow your car or SUV to start without hesitation. The gist of it means that when the key is turned an electrical pathway is created so that a spark can be generated to get the pistons pumping up and down. If this doesn't happen when you turn the key there very well could be an issue with the ignition switch in your vehicle. These are the most common symptoms of ignition switch trouble.

Car Fails to Start

One of the most obvious signs of a failing or faulty ignition switch is if the car won't start when the key is turned. This can happen due to normal wear and tear over many years. While there are many things that could prevent a car from starting, a professional technician will be able to quickly identify the main issue using modern diagnostics.

Key will not Turn

If you cannot easily turn the key in the ignition you may have a bad ignition switch. However, be sure you jiggle the steering wheel as your turn the key to make sure it isn't the steering lock.

Vehicle Stalls

A faulty ignition switch may cause your vehicle to suddenly shut off while idling or traveling down the road.

No Noise from the Starter Motor

To determine if you have ignition switch problem rather than starter motor problems listen to see for the sound of the starter motor actuating. If you can hear nothing there is actually a better chance you have ignition trouble because a bad starter motor will usually produce a click, versus no sound at all.

Dashboard Lights Flicker

A more uncommon, but still relevant symptom of a bad ignition switch is if your dash instruments suddenly shut off or your dash lights begin to flicker while driving down the street.

If your car is giving you trouble starting there is a good chance of ignition problems. But it could be caused by a variety of other issues, such as a bad starter, dead battery or failing alternator.
