4 Auto Maintenance Service Tips to Increase MPG's

If you're looking for ways to increase your car's fuel efficiency you will be happy to learn it is likely easier than you think. There are numerous ways to get higher MPGs just by improving your driving habits and perhaps by conducting a few simple auto maintenance services. Things such as removing excess weight from your vehicle can increase fuel efficiency by 5 percent or more for every 100 pounds removed, depending on your vehicle type. So there is no need to keep your golf clubs and gym equipment in the trunk all the time! While there are some things you can do to get the most out of your gas tank that have no costs, there are a few inexpensive maintenances that will ensure you can go farther on every fill up.

New Fuel Filter

A clogged or dirty fuel filter will result in a vehicle that struggles for gasoline. While it may seem like your vehicle will use less gas if it can't get any, a clogged filter will cause it to struggle for fuel, resulting in a major decrease in power and poor acceleration. As the car struggles for gasoline it burns it quicker than it would if it had proper fuel delivery, resulting in a drop of MPGs.

New Spark Plugs

The spark plugs are what generate the force that powers the pistons up and down. They do this by creating a tiny explosion which ignites the air fuel mixture inside the combustion chamber which then causes the engine to rotate. If the spark plugs become dirty or corroded it will cause misfires which results in a poor running vehicle that will suffer from a rough idle poor fuel economy due to the burning of gasoline at the wrong time.

Properly Inflate the Tires

If your tires are not properly inflated, particularly low on air, it will cause your engine to have to work harder in order to get the soft rubber to turn. Your tires need to be inflated to a proper PSI rating, which stands for pounds per square inch. You can find this number in your owner's manual or inside the driver's door jamb on many vehicles. You can also check your tires air pressure for free at many gas stations.

Install a New Air Filter

One of the most important things you can do for your vehicle to ensure that it is getting excellent fuel economy is to keep the air filter clean. If the air filter is clogged it will result in your vehicle burning high amounts of gasoline to compensate for the lack of oxygen. This is called running rich and will drop your fuel efficiency by a very high percentage.
