Is it time for cooling system repair?

Is it time for cooling system repair?Within moments of starting your car the engine is operating at extreme temperatures, that if left unregulated could actually cause parts of your engine to melt. Thankfully your vehicle is equipped with a cooling system to prevent that from occurring. However, if the cooling system fails you are likely to run into some major engine trouble if the problem is not resolved. Pay attention for these signs of cooling system failure and should you notice any contact a mechanic right away.

Rising temperature gauge

The first sign of trouble a driver will often come across if their car is experiencing cooling system trouble is a dashboard engine temperature gauge that rises to the red zone. If you notice this while in your vehicle be sure to pull over as soon as possible, as your vehicle is overheating and needs to be shut off. While this could be an anomaly that simply means your car got too hot this trip, it could be a sign of a larger overall cooling system problem.

White steam coming from under the hood

The next symptom of serious trouble is white steam pouring out from under the hood. Pull into a service station if this occurs, as your vehicle will likely require some sort of assistance to get back on the road, such as refilling its coolant reservoir.

Low coolant levels

From time to time be sure to check your car's fluid levels, including the coolant. If you find that the coolant levels are low you may also experience one of the following two symptoms as well, which will lead you to the cause of the low fluid levels.

White exhaust smoke

White exhaust smoke generally means that your car is mixing coolant into the air/fuel mix in the combustion chamber. This means there is an internal leak in the system. Unfortunately this may require extensive repairs to fix.

Visible coolant leak

If you spot a bright green liquid collecting underneath your car then you have just discovered a coolant leak. Low levels of coolant will lead your car to overheat, so be sure to get to a repair shop to have the leak location identified and fixed.

Pay attention to your car's signs of troubles and if you notice anything amiss, head to the auto repair shop for service.
