Why Won't My Car Start?
When it comes to car ownership, few things can be as annoying and gut-wrenching as a car that just won't start. If there is any upside to a no-start problem, it's that it is generally easily diagnosable and often simple to fix. Based on the symptoms you experience when you turn they key, you can often tell exactly what is wrong. Here are four of the most common no-start car problems.
If insufficient amounts of gasoline can't get to the combustion chamber, the car won't be able to start or run at all. The most common fuel issues are a failed fuel pump, a clogged fuel filter or dirty fuel injectors. If the car isn't getting gas to the combustion chamber, the engine will generally crank over and over without firing when the key is turned.
If the battery is dead, nothing will happen when you turn the key. A dead battery can be caused by leaving on lights, playing the radio with the engine off or even leaving a door ajar. In most cases a dead battery can be jump started and the alternator will recharge it. However, batteries do need to be replaced from time to time, usually 2 to 5 years depending on the type of battery your car is equipped with.
The alternator is what keeps the battery charged. It also powers most electrical equipment while the engine is running. It does this by generating electrical power from the motion of the motor. If the alternator begins to have trouble operating as designed, you will likely encounter issues with accessories, such as the radio, power windows or seats.
The starter motor is what gets the motion of the motor started. If the starter motor fails you will likely hear a loud click or a series of clicks. This is the sound of the starter motor actuating its pinion gear, but not spinning.
No start issues are definitely painful for you and your car, but as long as you trust a professional technician to fix the issue, you'll be on your way in no time.
